In Moldova, the abandonment of children results from many scenarios: parents leaving for jobs in Russia; alcoholism; divorce and lack of income for the mother; the actual selling of children into slavery or prostitution (highlighted in the September '03 issue of National Geographic Magazine.)      In addition to our ongoing support of orphanages and Christian Camps in Moldova, TRWL recently became the primary contributor to the purchase of this simple house. For about $2,500 the basic but solid dwelling was purchased by the Pentecostal Church in Bourche, Moldova, and became home for a single mother and six children. Ongoing contributions are needed, and we will expand this support to additional homes as finances allow. HARVESTER PROJECT      Farming and agribusiness represent 70 percent of Moldova's GDP. In a country where the average monthly income is $40, agriculture is the self-sustaining enterprise for nearly two-thirds of the population. The sweeping farmlands of Moldova are beautiful and potentially productive, but in the rural southern Moldova town of Bourche, capital is hard to come by.      At right, a view of the beautiful Moldovan countryside. Despite its rich soil and farming traditions, the inefficiencies of Soviet agriculture and the turmoil of transition to an independent nation have led to declining agricultural productivity. Sunflowers, wheat, and viticulture are agricultural mainstays.      To Russia With Love has been approached by Christian landowners near Ceadir-Lunga, in Southern Moldova, for help in acquiring a combine. Horse-powered farming is common throughout Moldova, but every harvesting season vital local capital is lost to itinerant combine sub-contractors for harvesting.      We are working with Dan Spangler of Spangler Farming (dan@spanglerfarming.com) to acquire a harvester and develop the infrastructure for a self-sustaining harvesting business serving the Christian community in this area.
